Doris Leatherby Hartman

February 11, 1918 - February 28, 2013

Doris Leatherby Hartman, 95, of Rockford passed away February 21, 2013 at Fairhaven Christian Retirement Center.  Born February 11, 1918 in Rockford, the daughter of Clifford and Alphild Leatherby.  A graduate of Rockford Central High School and West Suburban Hospital in Chicago as a Registered Nurse.  Married to Roy Hartman on August 29, 1941 in Rockford, who predeceased her in 2000.  Doris worked as an RN at Swedish American Hospital and Alma Nelson.  A charter member of Broadway Covenant Church and a member of St Mark's Lutheran Church, and a lifelong resident of Rockford other than their time spent in Mesa, AZ.

Doris was a devoted wife through WW II supporting her husband's service with Patton's 3rd Army. A strong willed mother and grandmother emphasizing family, faith, a sense of accomplishment and enjoyment of music. Doris combined love of travel visiting every state as well as Europe, Mexico, and the Caribbean to enjoy time with her family and friends.

As an accomplished nurse, Doris fully understood the value of eating right and exercising through swimming and aerobic activities, and especially line dancing and playing the piano daily until the age of 92 when her health began to fail.  Doris always placed great value on lifelong friendships participating with six High School couples in various activities most of their married lives.  Later in life Doris developed a very special kinship with Al Spangrud and enjoyed several years of adventures and companionship.

Survivors include her three children; Kenneth (Louise) Hartman of Pleasanton, CA, Sue (Leslie) Carlson of Simsbury, CT and Russell Hartman of Brighton, MI; seven grandchildren, Matthew and Jeffrey Hartman of CA, Linnsey Early of TX, Sara Leadbetter of VA, Stacie Charron of MA, Gregory and Rachel Hartman of CO; nine great grandchildren, brother Richard (Mary) Leatherby of Rockford, and daughter-in-law LaDonna Hopper Hartman of MI.

Memorial service Saturday, March 23, 11 am at Fairhaven's Chapel, 3470 North Alpine Road
